As developers or coders, we need a few tools to do our job as quickly as possible and be more productive. Thanks to the auto-complete and syntax highlighting feature in visual code editor.

About coders? Yup … I prefer to say coder than programmer because it looks more elegant πŸ˜†

There are many visual code editors, one of my favorites is Visual Studio Code (VS Code) from Microsoft. I often use this editor on macOS, it’s funny, isn’t it? I should have used Xcode LOL!

And the important thing is VS Code available on all major platforms, it cross-platform editors. That means developers on Mac, Windows, and Linux can use this incredibly powerful tool.

Visual code editor

Visual code editor is a source code editor with several features for debugging, syntax highlighting, intelligent code completion, snippets, code refactoring, and embedded Git.

We call it Integrated Development Environment (IDE). Almost all editors support multiple programming languages, either natively or by extension or plugin.

Free and Premium

Many editors have their own features and versions. We can purchase a community as free or premium versions with some features that are not in the free version.

I have tried the following editor such as Notepad++, Atom, TextMate, SublimeText, XCode, Eclipse, WebStorm, Android Studio, UltraEdit, and NetBeans. Now I use VS Code because it has a large extension, free, and more enjoyable.

Platform Spesific

Some editors are only suitable for specific needs and are only available on certain platforms.

XCode is only available on Mac and for developing Apple-related software such as iOS, macOS, WatchOS, and iPadOS.

Best Editor

There are plenty of visual code editors to code and to be more productive, as well as fun. I think of error code in programming as an art πŸ˜€

#1 Notepad++

This editor only available for Windows and supports several languages. The “++” refers to the increment operators in programming languages such as C, C++. Java, and JavaScript.

I used Notepad++ a few years ago while learning HTML and CSS. I thought it was a classic editor but you know, this editor still actively developed until now. It even has more plugins to expand its capabilities.

#2 Atom

It’s a free editor, an open-source text editor for macOS, Linux, and Microsoft Windows.

Also, it comes with plugins written in Node.js developed by GitHub. Atom is a desktop application for creating app using web technology.

This editor has a customize styling feature which means you are free to change its settings you want to use.

Because basically, atoms are using electron and javascript, so for the same style you write CSS files. We can also directly connect to our project on Github.

#3 TextMate

TextMate also can be used to write article

Compared to other text editors, TextMate is quite lightweight and CPU-friendly. We can also use it to write articles.

The draft from TextMate is completely clean without leaving any formatting or styling when copied into the WordPress post editor.

#4 SublimeText

Sublime Text has an ordinary interface, with amazing features, and great performance. More plugins that we can install easily and most of them are free.

SublimeText 3

Unfortunately, this editor itself is not free, it costs around $80 USD. When Sublime is in evaluation mode, you’ll get a nagging pop-up after a few saves to remind you that you haven’t paid for it.

But so far, I think this is like a Winrar License, in fact, we can use it for an unlimited period of time only the nag screen is coming.

#5 XCode

XCode is for Mac only

This editor is only available for Mac. The installer is huge at around 11GB, so you have to be careful with disk space.

It is a powerful IDE for iOS development and Apple-related software. But today I use Flutter so this editor is only for signing applications.

XCode has a pod file like composer in PHP or Gradle on Android. So it will be much easier to manage dependencies.

#6 Eclipse

We can use this visual code editor to create desktop and web-based applications with the main Java programming language.

Eclipse also supports other programming languages such as C++, Python, and Cobol.

Prior to Android Studio, some Android developers use this editor to create all kinds of applications.

Google also supports Eclipse by developing the Eclipse Android Developer Tool (ADT) plugin. With ADT, Eclipse can compile and test running Android projects.

Developing Android applications using Eclipse is much more challenging in my opinion, there are certain dependencies, and must resolve it manually. But nowadays many developers use Android Studio or VS Code, and so do I.

VSCode is enjoyable

I have used other visual code editors before, just out of curiosity and to see if there was anything more enjoyable.

From learning HTML CSS using Notepad ++ and now developing Flutter using VSCode.

Code Editor

VS code is one of visual code editor. You should try it if you haven’t already, it’s fun.

Visual Studio Code (free version of Microsoft Visual Studio)

Minimalist and fun, I don’t plan to move to another editor. It feels like you are coding in a premium Microsoft Visual Studio for VB.net or C# or any other Microsoft programming.

The extensions

Just like the others, we can also install Extensions according to our needs. There lots of extensions such as Bracket Pair Colorizer, and PHP Intelephense which I use often.

By installing the extensions we need, any visual code editor can be a lot more fun. We can also customize the look and feel, especially this VSCode. So coding will be more productive and enjoyable.

How about you? what is the best editor you use most often? Or maybe you’re still trying out some visual code editors to suit your needs?
